World Aids Day

On Thursday, December 1st the world will be celebrating World Aids Day. This is an annual global health day and is an opportunity for individuals all over the world to unite in the fight against HIV. It gives people the chance to show their support for individuals living with HIV and to raise much needed funds for continuing research into the condition.

It is estimated that there are approximately 34 million people living with HIV globally at this very moment. Although many scientific advances have been in the treatment of HIV since it was first discovered in the early 1980s, it is still important today to educate individuals on the condition. Stigma surrounding HIV still exists today and the aim of the ‘Not Retro, Just Wrong’ 2016 campaign is to end this stigma once and for all.

As part of the campaign, the World Aids Organisation is encouraging people to wear a red ribbon and share old photos of themselves and their loved ones from the 80s and 90s, to show that although some retro styles have come back into fashion that some things should be left in the past where they belong.

If you would like to fundraise on the day, there is a list here of great fundraising ideas that you can partake in. So, let’s rally together on December 1st and support a rewarding cause by eliminating HIV stigma #HIVNotRetro.
