Men’s Health Week 2018

I am delighted to announce that I am the spokesperson for the Irish Pharmacists Union for the upcoming Mens Health Week which takes place from 11th-17th June. The week which is organised in conjunction with the Men’s Health Forum in Ireland (MHFI) aims to enhance the health and well-being of men in Ireland.

The theme for 2018 is One small step for man, one giant leap for men’s health.  Almost 50 years ago, Neil Armstrong told the world “the Eagle has landed”, and got out of the lunar module saying some of the most famous words in history: “One small step for [a] man. One giant leap for mankind”. During MHW 2018, people in Ireland are also being asked to do something out of this world. Everyone is encouraged to work together to do at least one small practical thing to improve their own health, and the health of men across the island.

Most people are aware that some men are not, necessarily, good at going to their GP to have their health issues dealt with, yet, research also highlights that pharmacies can play a critical role in being the first point of contact for promoting and improving the health of men and boys. Here in the pharmacy, we will be highlighting the importance of the week and assuring men around Ireland that they can talk to their pharmacists if they need help.

Absolutely everyone can do something to support and celebrate MHW 2018. For information on how you can, and for additional resources,  visit the MHFI website here or visit the Men’s Health Man Manual which can be found here. For someone to talk to, always feel free to pop into your local pharmacy, or reach out to one of the many helplines such as Samaritans Ireland.
