You have probably gathered by now, I am all about supporting local, and preserving a sense of community. About 18 months ago, we were approached by the organisers of a local soccer team. They were canvassing local businesses, looking for sponsors as the team had been reformed after a period of inactivity. The team is called Markievicz Celtic Over-35s and they play in a local league with teams from Ringsend, Ballsbridge and other surrounding areas.
I was delighted to be asked to help. I do my best to support local initiatives as much as I can and this is another perfect fit in my mind. As a sports fan, I love the idea of having Conefrey’s logo on their jerseys: a fair exchange for sponsorship but I got as big a thrill as my children, seeing the jerseys done up and ready to go! My family has been part of this community for so long; it was an honour to help the team out. It’s my little payback to a community who has supported us all these years.
Their first season back, the team won a cup competition. Brilliant! The team organisers arrived, shiny cup in hand to the shop, and we had pictures taken with it. This season, the team is on course to win their league! I am very impressed with the team organisers and how they spotted an opportunity to put the team together. The group of lads on the team themselves are really committed to it, and this is apparent in how well they are doing. Obviously there is a social aspect to the team, further rooting them in the community, and with a bit of luck, continued success. Even if things were not going so well I would still be extremely happy to be associated with Markieivz Celtic Over-35s. My congratulations to them on two successful seasons and I look forward to many more years of partnership with them. Who knows, maybe one day soon you may see me in their jersey!!
